San Diego Veterinarian Discusses Endoscopy

Endoscopy is a veterinary procedure in which veterinarians use specialized video cameras to see areas within an animal’s body. It is a minimally invasive procedure, usually done to diagnose problems. During endoscopy, our veterinarian can visualize and even take samples of abnormalities. Veterinarians can even perform certain therapeutic procedures too, in procedures known as interventional endoscopy.

San Diego Veterinarian Describes the Endoscopy Procedure

Before performing an endoscopy, our San Diego veterinarian will perform a thorough evaluation of your pet’s health. During this evaluation, we will review your pet’s health history, perform a physical exam and determine if an endoscopy procedure is necessary.

Our San Diego veterinarian begins the endoscopy procedure by sedating your pet. Our vet then places a thin flexible tube, known as a catheter, into the animal’s nose or mouth. A tiny camera at the tip of the catheter captures images of your pet’s digestive system. The catheter also has small tools our veterinarian can use to take tissue samples or remove polyps.

Benefits of endoscopy in San Diego

Endoscopy provides a number of advantages over other diagnostic and surgical procedures. Endoscopy is superior to some types of diagnostic imaging as it gives our veterinarian a close-up view inside your pet’s digestive tract. Additionally, endoscopy allows our veterinarian to take samples – something we cannot do with conventional x-rays or other types of imaging.

Endoscopy offers a number of benefits over conventional surgery, including:

  • Less bleeding
  • Shorter recovery time
  • Substantially less pain
  • Smaller incisions, which cause less risk of infection and other complications
  • Less scarring and less scar tissue development, which can cause problems later in your pet’s life
  • Shorter hospital stay
  • Greater surgical and diagnostic precision
